P103 Advancing Service-Learning — A Three-Part Event

9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Cathy Berger Kaye, CBK Associates, international consultant and author, Los Angeles

Service-learning is advancing at the speed of light! New ideas! New books! New possibilities to grow the field! Join other practitioners for a highly interactive experience exploring effective methods and strategies.

Part 1: Going Deeper with Service-Learning — This experiential process takes us through a service-learning sequence. Using the framework of climate change and global warming, you will develop essential questions, process and collaborate through an “open space” investigation, take research to new heights, conduct an “interview” with an expert, and plan for action. Take back new and practical ways to work with youth and teachers.

Part 2: Hot Off the Press — This brief segment provides a preview of 20 new books, fiction and nonfiction, that connect learning and literacy to service, and may inspire a new generation of readers.

Part 3: Coaching Colleagues — What strategies and methods capture the attention of teachers (and administrators), spark curiosity, and increase involvement? This session includes a blend of tried-and-true practices, a think tank, and time to exchange what we know and what works.

(Note: Due to her speaking schedule, this is the only workshop Cathy Berger Kaye will offer at this year’s conference.)

Cathryn's new revised The Complete Guide to Service Learning: Proven Practical Ways to Engage Students in Civic Responsibility, Academic Curriculum, & Social Action Second Edition (Free Spirit Publishing) will be available at the conference! Includes CD-Rom and much new information ... a valuable resource that is easy-to-use again and again and again.
