The National Service Inclusion Project will be conducting a pre-conference training, an immersion learning session and two workshops focused on disability and inclusion in national and community service at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service. Information and descriptions of each session is listed below:

 

Pre-Conference: Getting Buy-in: Crafting Partnerships that Fully Embrace Inclusion

Monday, June 22: 8:00 am- 4:00 pm

Participants of all levels welcome

 

People with disabilities are now, more than ever, engaged in community service or volunteering. Whether responsible for inclusion in a service or volunteer program or just committed, how can you ensure that partners fully engage individuals with disabilities? How do you inspire and promote inclusion? Session graduates will be better equipped to ensure successful strategies with their partners.

 

Immersion Learning Session: Service as a Bridge to Employment for Individuals with Disabilities

Tuesday, June 23, 2009: 3:30-6:30 pm

Participants of all levels welcome

 

The historic unemployment and underemployment of people with disabilities is indisputable. Four out of five persons with disabilities are not employed nor are they considered a part of the available workforce, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Given this data and our current economy, developing competitive and marketable job skills are now more critical than ever. Volunteering and community service are proven avenues through which individuals have been able to improve their communities, gain skills, explore career paths, develop social networks, and experience the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of others. Join leaders from the national service and disability communities for a powerful dialogue on service and volunteering as a bridge to meaningful employment for individuals with disabilities.

 

Workshop: Measuring Disability Status: Your Story in Numbers

Tuesday, June 23: 8:00-9:30 am

For participants of intro to intermediate levels

 

This interactive workshop will discuss how to develop outcomes to track success in your inclusion efforts. This session will share effective practices for defining successful inclusion and will identify systems for demonstrating the positive impact of inclusion in volunteer programs. Come learn how to collect data to capture disability inclusion in your national service and volunteering programs.

 

Workshop: Including Members and Volunteers with Cognitive and Developmental Disabilities in National Service Programs

Wednesday, June 24: 10:00-11:30 am

For participants of intro to intermediate levels

 

This interactive and hands-on workshop will promote how to replicate effective practices and strategies to include members and volunteers with cognitive and developmental disabilities in national service programs.

 

The National Service Inclusion Project will also be operating the access and accommodation booth, which will be ongoing throughout the Conference. This booth will provide materials in alternative formats, mobility assistance, Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), sign language interpreters, sighted guides and reasonable accommodations. If you will be requesting a reasonable accommodation or alternative formats, please specify all requests when you register for the conference.
